Life can sometimes feel like prison, especially for those of us who have to go to school for 8 hours a day. I never understood why we are sent to school for 12 yrs of our life and yet we have to go to school for an addtional four years in order to get somewhere in life.
This subject was brought up today in my English class. We were discussing public education and how useful it really is. The majority of my class said that public education didn't really prep them at all for college. That being in highschool was just like a being in a prison. It felt like the government only kept you there in order to keep you out of trouble, and the very little education you received came only in "bite sized" portions over a long period of time.
Receiving a highschool diploma can get you a job. So that's something positive about it. Sure if you want to be satisfied with minium wage or a little more than that. But if you want to make a good living, and not live pay check to pay check, you have to go to college. This may not be the case for everyone, but for majority of society this is true. You can't go to to college without getting through highschool first. Yes, but does that "bite-sized" education really take four years? All you really need is basic math, reading and writing skills.
So why are we confined to white, four-walled rooms, sitting in hard desks for 12 years of our life? Maybe because it's always been that way.
